In Costa Rica preColumbian stamps have been found in archaeological contexts located mainly in the Pacific more specifically the North Pacific and the Central regions. These artifacts have been found mainly in burial pits and residential sites dating from 100 BC to 800 AD but may have been used up until European contact. They were used mainly as body decorations although they may have also been used on other surfaces such as wood and organic fibers. The fact that the figures and these items were found among funerary offerings shows that seals and the image they made were important on a social and symbolical level. Its designs fall into three categories geometrical figures fauna and human representations.
